Do I need a solicitor to make a Will?
No. A Will does not have to be prepared by a solicitor. What matters is that it accurately records your wishes and is correctly signed and witnessed in accordance with the legal requirements.
How much does Will Writing cost?
Our Simple Online Will is £49 and our Expanded Online Will is £99, subject to suitability checks. Personal Will writing is £180 for an individual Will or £320 for Mirror Wills. We explain the fee before work begins.
What are mirror Wills?
Mirror Wills are commonly used by couples who want broadly similar arrangements, for example leaving their estate to each other first and then to chosen beneficiaries.
When should I update my Will?
You should consider reviewing your Will after important changes such as marriage, separation, the birth of children or grandchildren, buying or selling property, or a significant change in your finances or family circumstances.
Who can witness my Will?
A Will normally requires two witnesses. They should not be beneficiaries under the Will, and it is generally best that they are independent adults who are not receiving anything under it.
Can I change my Will later?
Yes. Your circumstances and wishes can change over time. Depending on the changes required, you may need a new Will or an appropriate amendment. Changes must be made correctly — you should not simply write alterations onto your signed Will.
What happens if I die without a Will?
If you die without a valid Will, your estate is distributed under the intestacy rules rather than according to instructions you have personally chosen.
What is the 7-year rule for gifts and Inheritance Tax?
Some gifts made during your lifetime may fall outside your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes if you survive for seven years after making the gift. Different rules can apply. Read the GOV.UK guidance.
Can I leave a child or family member out of my Will?
In England and Wales, you generally have considerable freedom to choose beneficiaries, but certain family members and dependants may be able to claim against an estate. Discuss potentially contentious exclusions personally rather than relying only on a simple online Will.
How old do I need to be to make a Will?
In England and Wales, you normally need to be 18 or over to make a valid Will. You must also act voluntarily, understand what you are doing and have the Will properly signed and witnessed.
What if I do not have a printer?
You can add a printed and bound Will pack at checkout: £25 for collection or £35 for tracked UK delivery. You will still need to sign it correctly with two witnesses.
Is a simple online Will suitable for everyone?
Online Wills can suit straightforward arrangements. If you own a business or overseas property, require trusts, have a blended family or particular dependency issues, personal support may be more suitable.
